I just love the month of July, don’t you? There is something so special about the smell of backyard barbecues, the sound of neighborhood parades, and the anticipation of fireworks lighting up the night sky. As homeschool families, the Fourth of July gives us a wonderful, natural opportunity to pause our regular routines and look back at the history of our nation.

But as I sit on the porch with my final two high schoolers at home—reflecting on the eight children we’ve already raised and graduated—I am reminded that patriotic holidays are good for so much more than just a history lesson. They are the perfect canvas for teaching our kids about an even greater reality: the true nature of freedom.

It’s one thing to celebrate the liberty we enjoy as citizens, but it is an entirely different, beautiful thing to help our children understand the absolute freedom we have as children of God.

The Cost of Earthly Liberty

When we look back at July 4, 1776, we see a group of brave individuals who united together to declare independence from Great Britain. The trouble had been brewing since 1760, when King George III began taxing the colonies to pay for his wars and run his empire. The colonists famously rebelled against “taxation without representation,” and war broke out.

Yet, even after the Founders signed that historic Declaration, they still had to roll up their sleeves and fight for it. The Revolutionary War raged on until 1783! Winning that independence meant they finally had the earthly freedom to live, govern, and worship according to the convictions of their hearts.

As homeschool parents, we love teaching our kids about these historical milestones. But we also want to use these lessons to point them to a much bigger problem—and a much bigger Savior.

What Does True Freedom Mean for Our Souls?

Freedom Fourth of July

While we are blessed to live in a free nation, every single one of us is born under a completely different kind of tyranny. We have our own big problem, and its name is sin.

Sin causes us to want to do things that are the exact opposite of what God desires. It binds us, and it isn’t something we can overcome by simply “trying harder” or checking off a list of good behavior. The only way to experience true liberty is to invite a new Ruler into our lives—and that Ruler is Jesus.

When the fireworks light up the sky this year, let’s use that brilliant display to remind our kids that Jesus broke the chains of sin and brought us a freedom that no earthly kingdom can ever take away.

“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” — John 8:36

4 Ways to Teach Kids About True Freedom in Christ

Here are four simple truths you can share around the picnic table or while waiting for the fireworks to start this July:

  1. Look at the Heart: Teach your children that sin isn’t just about making bad choices or breaking rules. It’s a matter of the heart. When we open our Bibles to Matthew 15:18-19, Jesus reminds us that our outward actions always flow from what is happening on the inside.
  2. Understand the Origin: Walk your kids through Genesis 3. Help them see that sin entered the world when mankind rebelled against God’s original, beautiful plan for creation.
  3. Acknowledge the Need: Be honest with your kids about our need for a Savior. Romans 3:23 tells us that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glorious standard. Because of sin, we cannot bridge the gap to God on our own.
  4. Celebrate the Rescue: Share the beautiful rescue plan of the gospel! God saw our helplessness and made a way for us to be completely free. John 3:16 reminds us that He loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life.

Before the big neighborhood celebrations begin, take a few quiet minutes as a family to read a faith-filled book like God Bless Our Country. It’s a wonderful way to teach sweet young hearts the values of patriotism and gratitude while keeping our eyes firmly fixed on the Lord.

A Fourth of July Prayer for Your Family

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible blessing of living in a free land, and thank You for the families You have entrusted to our care. As we celebrate our nation’s independence, open our eyes to see the deeper, everlasting freedom we have in Jesus. I pray for the sweet homeschool mom or dad reading this today—give them wisdom as they intentionally disciple their children this summer. Wash our hearts clean, break every chain of worry or sin, and let our homes be filled with Your joy and light. We praise You for all You have done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
