The Arkansas EFA and School Choice: What Local Families Need to Know

If you are a parent in Arkansas, you have likely heard the buzz about the Educational Freedom Account (EFA). For some, it sounds like a dream come true. For others, it feels like a confusing maze of government acronyms. After homeschooling my tribe in the Natural State for years, I have watched the school-choice landscape shift significantly.

I know the tension you feel. You want the best for your child, but you also want to protect the unique, heart-centered atmosphere of your home. Is the EFA a “divine appointment” for your family’s budget, or is it a “weight” that might complicate your peace?

Form Your Values Before Your Budget

Whenever a new opportunity like the EFA arises, I go back to my “Brain Dump” method. I list out my family’s core values first. If a program helps us reach those goals without compromising our “Relationship over Rigor” philosophy, then it is worth considering.

Remember, homeschooling is about freedom. Whether you use state funding or pay for everything out of pocket, the goal is to be a responsive teacher who prioritizes the child over the checklist. Do not let the excitement of “extra funds” push you into a curriculum or a schedule that does not fit the rhythm of your home.

“School choice is not just about money following the student; it is about empowering parents to be the primary architects of their children’s education. Programs like the EFA allow for a truly customized learning experience.”

— Ken Surritte, Arkansas education advocate and school choice expert

Stewardship for EFA Families

Now that the application window for the 2026–2027 school year has closed, the focus shifts from applying to stewarding your resources. For the 2026–2027 year, the EFA provides approximately $7,208 per student (Arkansas Department of Education [ADE], 2026).

  • Manage Your Marketplace: Once approved, use the ClassWallet platform to manage your funds. Ensure your account is fully verified and your spending plans align with state-approved vendors.
  • Keep Your Records Simple: If you take EFA funds, you must use that money for approved purchases. Use a simple record-keeping system or a dedicated planner to stay organized.
  • Maintain Your “Quiet Time”: Government programs come with paperwork. Do not let the administrative side of the EFA steal your peace. Set aside one “work window” a month to handle your reporting so it does not bleed into your daily school time.

A Strategic Curriculum Wishlist

I have curated a wishlist that balances academic excellence with the heart-centered approach we value in our home. These resources help us invest in high-quality, “open-and-go” tools that free us up for more connection time.

  1. Core Academic Curriculum:
    • Math-U-See (Levels K-12): A mastery-based program that is highly effective for large families because of its clear video instruction.
    • Sonlight Curriculum: Uses “living books” to teach. You can often combine multiple children into one “Level” to save time and money.
  1. Specialized Instruction & Electives:
    • IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing): A structured, video-based writing program that builds immense confidence.
    • Teaching Textbooks: Computer-based and graded automatically—a perfect “independent window” resource.
    • Apologia Science: Creation-based science that focuses on immersion and wonder.
  1. Educational Tools & Technology:
    • Apple MacBook Air & Dell Monitors: Essential for digital research and student-led projects.
    • Creative Kits: Resources like “Mind & Soul” Healing Art Boxes with high-quality watercolor sets encourage hands-on discovery without the prep work.

School Choice Across the Nation

Arkansas is part of a growing national movement. Many other states have established their own versions of “School Choice” or “Education Freedom” programs:

  • Florida (Step Up For Students): As the nation’s largest scholarship program, Step Up For Students is the gold standard for many. It offers flexible Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), such as the Personalized Education Program (PEP), which provides roughly $8,000 annually for homeschoolers to use for curriculum, therapy, and technology. Families manage everything through the Education Market Assistant (EMA) portal, making it a highly efficient model for those seeking flexible, parent-directed education (Step Up For Students, 2026).
  • Arizona (Empowerment Scholarship Account): Often considered the pioneer of the universal ESA model, Arizona’s application process is generally available on a rolling basis throughout the year (Ballotpedia, 2026).
  • Tennessee (Education Freedom Scholarship Act): Tennessee provides scholarship accounts for eligible students. Their application window typically concludes in early winter to allow for processing (Tennessee Department of Education, 2026).
  • Texas (Education Savings Account): Texas has implemented programs that often utilize high-demand, shorter application windows in the spring (Texas Education Freedom Accounts, 2026).

Whether you choose to use the EFA or continue homeschooling independently, your value as a mom is not determined by your funding source. It is found in the way you love, lead, and mentor the hearts of your children every single day.
