In this video, The Spoon Lady, Hunter the Spoon Man, and Les Blackwell jam away to “Worried Man Blues.” With a man on the banjo, one on the guitar, and The Spoon Lady on the spoons, the old folk song sure sounds great. Watch the video to hear it.
It’s fascinating to watch Abby Roach, The Spoon Lady, keep in perfect rhythm the whole time as she makes music with a pair of spoons. Seeing the three of them hanging out on the porch makes you feel like sitting down and joining them.
Some Background for This Song
“Worried Man Blues” was first recorded by country group The Carter Family in 1930. Others who also sang it were Woody Guthrie, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, Van Morrison, and George Jones. The Carters were the first to sing it, but they learned it from someone else, who remained unnamed.
Some of the lyrics to “Worried Man Blues” are:
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
I'm worried now
But I won't be worried long
1930 was the year after the stock market crashed, so a lot of people were feeling the “Worried Man Blues.” It’s likely remained such a popular folk song because, no matter what point in time, someone can always relate to it.
It’s lovely to hear these three artists make music together. They’ve each got their own set of skills, and sound even better together. There is also something to be said about the simple and casual style of the performance. There are no fancy microphones or a stage. It’s just a homey porch on a sunny day. It’s got a genuine feel that everyone will love.
